Dieffenbachia, Tropic Snow
Scientific Name: Dieffenbachia amoena 'Tropic Snow'
Common Names: Dumb cane, Leopard lily
Dieffenbachia originate from different areas in Latin America and the West Indies. They are a great addition to indoor spaces, with their unique variegations and large leaves. Dieffenbachia are relatively slow growing and mature plants can range 3-10 feet in height, so these are great plants to jazz up larger indoor spaces.
However, the common name "Dumb Cane" stems from the fact that the sap of the Dieffenbachia is EXTREMELY TOXIC. If you nibble on the leaves (DO NOT DO THIS), your mouth and tongue will be temporarily paralyzed and you won't be able to speak. This is not a great plant to have around kids or pets!
The Tropic Snow cultivar of the Dieffenbachia amoena species has slightly smaller leaves than the primary amoena species. It has green leaves with creamy white variegations that are different on every leaf.
Basic Care: Dieffenbachia like medium to bright, indirect light, but can tolerate lower light conditions. It doesn't like direct bright light, and if your Dieffenbachia starts to lose color in its leaves, it might be getting too much light. They appreciate humidity so if you can provide additional humidity for them by misting or setting them on a tray with water & rocks, they would love it! Pot in a well draining potting soil. Dieffenbachia don't like to be overwatered, and would tolerate drying out a little better than being watered too frequently. Let the first 2 inches of soil dry out before watering.
