Aloe Vera
Scientific Name: Aloeaceae
Common Name: Aloe Vera
Native to sub-Saharan Africa, the Aloe plant has been revered for thousands of years-- it is said the Ancient Egyptians themselves called this amazing specimen "the plant of immortality"! The leaves of this super succulent contain a gel that is globally used to treat burns, cuts, and wounds; modern studies have shown that aloe can be used to moisturize skin, improve hair health, and even help with blood sugar regulation!
With shallow roots meant for drawing water from even the driest soil conditions, aloe vera store the water they've gathered in their serrated, dappled green leaves. Aloe Vera plants are incredibly tough and resilient, which makes them perfect beginner-friendly houseplants! They are not only super cute and easy to care for, but their gel can be harvested and used whenever needed -- talk about a plant that's got it all!
Basic Care Notes: Plant in well-draining cactus soil. Provide medium to bright indirect light while avoiding direct sun. Aloe prefer to be watered irregularly but deeply, roughly every 2 weeks or when soil is completely dry.
Common Problems: If your aloe leaves are turning brown and/or mushy, your plant is likely overwatered; to remedy this , scale back on your watering frequency. If your aloe is looking wrinkly or shriveled, that's your plant telling you it needs a drink! Water thoroughly until excess liquid comes out the bottom of your pot.
