Anthurium, Ace of Spades
Scientific Name: Anthurium papillilaminum x 'Ace of Spades'
Common Name: Anthurium Ace of Spades
Anthuriums are a collection of over 1,000 different species that hail from the Caribbean and Central and South America. Different species within the genus are epiphytic (grow on trees in nature) or terrestrial (grow on the ground). Anthuriums are generally an upright plant, meaning they don't tend to trail or vine and will stay upright as they mature. While the Anthurium Andreanum is one of the most famous Anthuriums, due to its popularity in floral arrangements and gift baskets, there are many others that are great additions to any houseplant collection.
The Ace of Spades Anthurium has somewhat unclear originations, other than being cultivated by Dennis Rotolante at Silver Krome Gardens in the late 1980s. Legend says that Hurricane Andrew in 1992 destroyed the mother plant but others survived! The Ace of Spades has heart- (or spade-) shaped velvety, dark green leaves with white or silver veining that provides a striking contrast to the green. New leaves start out a dark red before they mature into their dark green color.
Basic Care Notes: Bright, indirect light-- avoid direct light! Water when top 1-2 inches of soil feels dry to the touch-- never let this plant completely dry out. Anthurium Fingers can be planted in a well-draining soil of peat moss, perlite, and orchid bark. This plant appreciates warm temperatures and high humidity. A gentle houseplant fertilizer can be applied in spring and summer to help promote growth!
