Begonia, Ferox
Scientific Name: Begonia Ferox
Common Name: Ferox Begonia
Begonias are beloved houseplants, primarily famous for their incredibly unique foliage variations and variegations, from polka dots to fuzzy (or spiky!) leaves. Begonias tend to be slightly high-maintenance, and are generally considered to be a little more advanced of a houseplant, but don't let that stop you from trying!
The Ferox (Latin for fierce or ferocious) Begonia is a quirky and unusual plant to add to a collection. Younger leaves are a light green and have little "spikes" all over the leaves. As it matures, the leaves become a darker green with deep red accents on the "spikes" and undersides of the leaves. The "spikes" are called bullae, and are actually smooth to the touch. When the leaves mature further, the underside of the bullae become hollow "craters" underneath the leaves. All in all, a striking addition to even the most experienced of begonia collectors! If your begonia is extra happy, it will also bloom pinkish flowers during the spring!
Basic Needs: Bright, indirect light. Does not like to be soaking wet, but also cannot handle being dry for extended periods of time. We recommend small, but frequent waterings. PRO TIP: to grow a more evenly bushy begonia, rotate your pot every week so a different side is exposed to light-- this will encourage more even growth from all sides!
***Due to the unique nature of plants, the one we carefully choose for you won't look exactly like the photos. but it will be just as beautiful!
