Cactus, Moonlight
Scientific Name: Selenicereus wecklei
Common Names: Moonlight Cactus
Cacti have become a beloved choice for indoor plants due to their minimal upkeep and vast array of species with unique growth patterns. Plus, their playful and quirky aesthetics are sure to make you smile (and maybe even do a double take)!
Moonlight cacti are tropical cacti that in nature are epiphytic (grow in/on trees) or lithophytic (grow in/on rocks). Their unique, pencil-shaped leaves are smaller and thinner because they don't need to hold onto water like a desert cactus might, which needs a larger reserve stored in its leaves & trunk to last between infrequent water access.
The Moonlight Cactus has long, thin limbs that can branch off as they grow. This is a great plant for a hanging basket or to put on a shelf so it can trail down! Moonlight cacti can also produce blooms at the end of their limbs and have large, beautiful fragrant flowers.
Basic Care: This tropical cactus is different from desert varieties and can tolerate lower light conditions (but prefers bright, indirect light!) and also enjoys and appreciates humidity. Watering is more similar to a regular tropical houseplant, and you can water when the top two inches of soil are dry, as opposed to waiting for the soil to be bone dry as with other cacti. However, take care not to overwater!
Watering Test: If your cactus is squeezable, give it a gentle squeeze. If it feels squishy or looks wrinkly, it needs a watering.
***Due to the unique nature of plants, the one we carefully choose for you won't look exactly like the photos. but it will be just as beautiful!
