Cactus, Fishbone

Cacti have become a beloved choice for indoor plants due to their minimal upkeep and vast array of species with unique growth patterns. Plus, their playful and quirky aesthetics are sure to make you smile (and maybe even do a double take)! 

The cacti in the genus Epiphyllum are also often called orchid cactus. They are tropical cacti and thrive in humid, wet environments, as opposed to desert cacti. Orchid cacti are generally epiphytic (grow in/on trees) or lithophytic (grow in/on rocks). They have flat leaves because they don't need to hold onto water like a desert cactus might, which needs a larger reserve stored in its leaves & trunk to last between infrequent water access. Many orchid cacti can produce blooms at the end of their limbs and have large, beautiful fragrant flowers.

The Fishbone Cactus is an epiphytic tropical cactus that is native to Mexico. It can be somewhat rare or hard-to-find, and it is known for its flattened stems that look like...you guessed it...fishbones!

Because the Fishbone Cactus is a tropical cactus, it has flattened leaves as it loves humidity and water, and doesn't need to be able to store water like its desert-dwelling friends. Its growth pattern is reminiscent of the Queen of the Night or Christmas Cactus. These are a great trailing plant for a hanging basket or bookshelf. 

Basic Care: This tropical cactus is different from desert varieties and can tolerate lower light conditions and also enjoys and appreciates humidity. Watering is more similar to a regular tropical houseplant, and you can water when the top two inches of soil are dry, as opposed to waiting for the soil to be bone dry as with other cacti.
