Jewel Orchid, Sea Turtle
Scientific Name: Ludochilus 'Sea Turtle' is a hybrid between the two jewel orchids known as Ludisia discolor and Anoectochilus formosanus
Common Name: Sea Turtle Jewel Orchid, Tiger Orchid, Golden Lace Orchid
Jewel Orchids are different from "normal" orchids despite their shared common name. Jewel Orchids are known for their beautiful, rich "jewel-toned" foliage as opposed to their blooms. Other orchids are also epiphytic (grow on trees) in their natural habitats, which is why they need special airy, bark-focused potting mediums when kept as indoor plants. Jewel orchids are perfectly happy living in a soil-based medium (terrestrial).
The Sea Turtle Jewel Orchid has velvety burgundy leaves with silvery veining and shimmery iridescence if it receives the right amount of light. It can get up to 6-8" tall and will trail if left to its own devices. It can trail up to 12" and is also easy to propagate if you choose to maintain its length.
Basic Care Notes: Medium to low light - the shimmery iridescence will show up more if the orchid is kept in lower light. These thrive in terrariums and love humidity but be careful not to overwater them, either. Wait until the top 2 inches of soil is dry before watering again.
