Plant in late spring after soil has warmed in full sun and rich, well-drained soil. Optimal soil temperature for germination is 70-85°F. Young plants are very frost sensitive.
Harvest tender edamame when pods are plump but still green.
The pods of this 2-3′ plant make a delicious and nutritious snack, rich in protein and calcium. Each pod yields 3-4 beans that can be cooked like peas after shelling. Or boil whole pods in salted water for five minutes for a shell-it-yourself treat.
