FLOWERING SHRUBS Evergreen Azaleas: Medium growing evergreen shrub, blooms early spring. Available in reds, pinks, white and lavenders. Does well with morning sun and afternoon shade. Exbury Azaleas: A hardy deciduous shrub with blooms that resembles a rhododendron in shades of peaches, oranges, reds and pale pinks - mildly fragrant. Does well in full sun and grows to four feet. Barberry (Pgmy): Burgundy foliage. Grows 18 to 22 inches tall and keeps best color in full sun. Does not like drought conditions. Boxwood: A small leaf evergreen that prefers shady areas. Grows to three feet, great for small hedges. Buddleia (Butterfly Bush): Grows 4 to 5 feet with continuous blooms all summer. Attracts butterflies and is available in purple, blue, white and pink. Cistena Plum: A large upright shrub. Reddish-purple foliage throughout summer. Single, pink fragrant flowers in late spring. Prefers full sun. Daphne (Rock): Broadleaf evergreen that grows 12 inches high and 36 inches wide. Blooms clusters of fragrant rosy pink flowers in April and May. Choice rock garden plant. Likes sun to partial shade. Dogwood, Red Twig: Broad spreading rounded form. White flower clusters late spring. Dark red stems are beautiful in winter. Full sun or shade. Dogwood, Yellow Twig: A golden-yellow stemmed form, similiar to the reds. Excellent winter effect. White flowers and berries. Glossy green foliage. Full sun or shade. Dogwood, Variegated Red Twig: Upright form with creamy white margins on the green foliage. Bright red branches form an attractive winter effect. Full sun preferred but adapts to part shade. Emerald & Gold Euonymus: Small yellow and green evergreen shrub. Does well in sun to part shade. Good fall color and grows to three feet. Euonymus (Burning Bush): Dwarf compact shrub with dark green foliage on unique square stems. Brilliant red fall color. Likes full sun. Grows to five feet. Euonymus (Purple Wintercreeper): Glossy dark green leaves with a vining climbing growth habit on fences and walls. Evergreen with purple fall color and likes sun. Flowering Almond (Pink): Slow growing shrub with double pink flowers blooming in early spring. Bright shinny green foliage. Grows to three feet. Flowering Quince: One of the first shrubs to bloom in spring. The blooms are reddish-orange. Branches are thorny and bear quince-like berries. Birds are attracted to the flowers. Likes full sun. Forsythia: An upright grower to ten feet. Produces golden-yellow flowers with orange markings in early spring. Holly (Blue Boy & Blue Girl): One of the most hardy of holly varieties. Traditional holly shaped leaves and red berries in the fall. Grows to four feet, prefers shade and acidic soil. Honeysuckle (Dwarf): Dense arching shrub with yellow or red blooms in May & June. Red berries in the fall. Flowers attract hummingbirds. Likes sun to part shade. Grows to three feet. Hydrangea (Merrits Supreme): Natural occurring red globe shaped flowers. Prefers shade and acidic soil. Grows three to four feet tall. Hydrangea (Niko Blue): Natural occurring blue globe shaped flowers. Likes shade and enjoys acidic soil. Grows to three to four feet tall. Hydrangea (Pee Gee): A hardy shrub with showy white double blooms, which change to pinky-bronze toward autumn. The leaves have a bronze coloring in the fall. Laurel: A broad leaf evergreen. Blooms white in May. Prefers shade. Good for foundation planting. Grows to three feet. Lilac (Charles Joly): Double blooming french hybrid that grows 8 to 12 feet high. Dark purplish-red blooms. A later variety. Likes full sun. Lilac (Katherine Havemeyer): Double lavender pink blooms. Heavy producer, likes full sun. Grows 8 to 12 feet tall. Lilac (Ludwig Spaeth): Dark purple buds blooming in May. Dark green foliage. Fast growing to six feet tall. Lilac (Miss Kim): Deep purple buds open to icy purple blue flowers. Blooms later than most lilacs. Dark green foliage turns to burgundy in fall. Grows to three feet tall. Lilac (Mme Lemoine): Fragrant double white blooms, vigourous grower. Grows 8 to 12 feet. Lilac (Monge): An outstanding showy reddish purple bloom that blooms in May. Blue green foliage. Grows to 6-8 feet tall. Lilac (President Grevy): Fragrant double white blooms, vigorous grower. Grows 8 to 12 feet. Mediterranean Heather: A shade loving low growing evergreen, blooms pink or white flowers earliest in the spring. Mock Orange: A broad well branched shrub. Pure white, semi-double flowers which bloom in June. Very fragrant. Grows to 6-8 feet tall. Likes full sun. Mt Laurel: Compact evergreen shrub with oval glossy leaves and red, pink or white flowers in late spring. Likes shade. Ninebark (Dwarf Golden): Hardy golden leaf shrub, with dense bushy growing habit. White to pinkish flowers blooming May-June. Grows to 4-5 feet tall. Oregon Grape (Broadleaf Evergreen): Clusters of yellow flowers in spring. Blue berries in fall. Red to purplish fall color. Likes shade. Pieris (Mountain Fire): Grows to 36 inches tall. Glossy, dark green leaves with fiery red new growth. Blooms clusters of small white flowers in early spring. Prefers shade. Privet (Golden): In full sun these yellow leaves are brightest. A three to four foot shrub. Showy clusters of creamy white flowers in late spring or early summer. Pyracantha: Evergreen shrub that is vigorous grower. Clusters of white flowrs bloom in spring. Bright orange berries are real showy in fall. Likes partial shade. Rainbow Shrub: Slow growing evergreen shrub with variegated leaves that change color throughout the summer. Purple fall color. Needs shade. Rose of Sharon: Upright shrub. Open saucer-like or double flowers cover the entire plant. Blooms profusely July to frost. Full sun to part shade. Rhododendrons: This year's collection of rhododendrons will be all H1 and H2 varieties. Both dward and standard varieties like morning sun and afternoon shade. They need acidic soil and come in a wide array of colors to choose from. Rhododendrons are a broad leaf evergreen and do very well in our area with a minimum of winter care. Saucer Magnolia: Symmetrical upright shrub or small tree with large fragrant blooms. Flowers open light purple at base shading to pink at tips. Also comes in yellow and white. Blooms in early spring. Smoke Bush (Royal Purple): A unique upright shrub with reddish-purple foliage during summer. Blooms mid-summer with showy red flowers turning to dramatic puffs of purple to lavender'smoke'. Needs full sun. Spirea (Anthony Waterer): Good flowering hedge. Rose-pink flowers blooming in June till frost. Good fall foliage color. Needs very little pruning, grows to four feet and likes sun. Spirea (Bridalwreath): Fountain shaped growth with blue-green leaves. Showy pure white flowers. Blooms profusely in May. Spirea (Goldflame): Spring foliage bright golden color, with red new growth, turning green in summer and in the fall turning to a radiant copper color. Light crimson flowers all summer. Needs little pruning, grows to 2-3 feet and likes sun. Viburnum (Burkwood): Very hardy shrub, with dark green glossy leaves. Flowers are fragrant and white. Blooms early spring. Fruit is blue-black and often liked by birds. Viburnum (Cranberry Bush): Hardy shrub with white flowers in late May. Deep red foliage in the fall. Scarlet red berries. Grows to five feet. Viburnum (Dawn): Upright growing, leathery foliage turning red in fall. Tiny pink flowers bloom in early spring. Red berries turning black. Grows to eight feet. Weigela (Java Red): Compact mounding spreader. Foliage is deep green tint purple. Deep pink flowers opening from bright red buds. Blooms late spring, grows to 3-4 feet and likes full sun. Weigela (Pink Prince): Very hardy and blooms brilliant pink flowers May through June. Likes sun and moderate water. Yucca: Evergreen perennial. Clusters of tough sword shaped leaves and blooms large clusters of white flowers on spike up the center of the plant. Likes full sun. |
