Lets talk Moles, Voles, Gophers, and Mice

At long last winter is over, the snow is all melted from your yard and now you are noticing smaller size mounds of soil throughout the grass and plant beds. What is going on can you help me?

This is a typical question we will be asked this spring. The most common culprits are moles, voles, gophers, or mice. They spend the long winter burrowing in the ground feeding on your bulbs, perennials, and soft white roots of ornamental and fruit bearing shrubs and trees. It's important to recognize the damage early and try protective measure against further damage. Here are some suggestions:
  • Plastic Pinwheels or large scale windmills move in the breeze allowing soil to shake creating the illusion of people present which is something they avoid.
  • Plant allium bulbs and fritillaria bulbs among your bulbs. These emit an odor in the ground that is repulsive to them and these little varmits avoid the area.
  • Finding the tunnels and placing baited peanuts in the holes are good solutions.
  • Solutions before planting could include lining the hole crushed oyster shells, Volebloc, or using chicken wire to protect the main roots from damage.
