April Gardening Tips

Plant your hardy perennials. There are literally hundreds of varieties to available, for more info link to our Collections page for ideas.

Start hardy annual seeds indoors for setting outside next month.
|
 |
Cole crops such as broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower can be planted out in your garden now.
|
 |
Plant garlic, rhubarb, potatoes, beets, carrots, and other root crops now while soil temperature is still a little cool.
|
 |
This is a good month to plant fruit and shade trees, rose bushes, and a variety of other flowering shrubs.

 |
Plant strawberries and pinch off the first year’s flowers to encourage runners and better plants and fruit the following year.

 |
Re seeding lawns with grass seed to fill in bare spots as well as starting new lawns with seed is a good thing to do this month.

Plant hardy summer flowering bulbs such as gladioli and cannas this month.

Start frost sensitive or warm weather vegetables indoors now: tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, melons, and cucumbers.

Plant berry plants while the weather is still cool such as Raspberries, Blueberries, Grapes, Huckleberries, etc.

Plant hardy pansies and enjoy early blooms.

Fertilize the lawn if you have not done so with a 21-7-14 ratio that includes extra iron and sulfur. Mow your lawn first and water in well.

Herbs- Plant outdoors hardy perennial herbs and start tender annual herbs indoors for planting outside at a later date.
